Met Deco #11: Aurélie Malau part 2, organization at the service of decoration

Rencontré Déco #11 : Aurélie Malau partie 2, l'organisation au service de la déco - Aire

Aire continues her home tour with Aurélie. Here's the second part of her interview. Let's take a closer look at her home. How did she come up with her ideas? How does she stay organized?

What is your storage system? Do you have a way of organizing yourself?

We have created storage that adapts to everyone's needs . We have really worked so that our girls can have space in their rooms and receive friends. We ask for a certain rigor in the storage. Everything is set up so that they can put their things away properly. It's true that the little one takes out a large quantity of toys. But the storage is really simple so it's not torture.

Schoolbags are often lying around when they come home from school. They are asked to put everything away after homework. Everything must be in its place . They have a place to put their bags and a shelf to store their notebooks and books. When it's adapted, it's necessarily simpler. We tend to leave everything lying around when we don't have storage.

The girls are completely free to organize their rooms however they want. The little one can keep toys for weeks. It's her space. But she has to tidy up as soon as she's done playing. We want the rooms to be clean. We organized everything together. We bought boxes for the toys and wrote down what they were. They now enjoy tidying up because they know where everything goes.

I know folding t-shirts isn't easy for kids. We give them tips to make it easier for them. There are things we hang. There are other things we organize like Marie Kondo .

Where do you look for your ideas and inspiration?

I worked in clothing stores for a long time. I think part of my inspiration comes from that. We're used to tidying, folding, and optimizing our space. I was also inspired by Marie Kondo's folding method . We try to adapt storage systems to children. They can't tidy like me. It shouldn't be complicated. They like everything to be tidy when friends come over. They like there to be space.

Whenever possible, we try to improve and find suitable solutions . I know my eldest daughter wanted a vanity area. She has a large walk-in closet. We built it in. We try to make their lives easier. We listen to their needs.

What advice would you give to someone who is struggling to find inspiration?

When buying a house, you need to make sure it looks nice, but you also need to consider the storage space you need . Sometimes, interiors are difficult to arrange and organize.

I recommend not stopping at a YouTube video, a press article, or a Pinterest pin. It can sometimes take weeks of research. You get to a point where you say to yourself, "This can do it." You shouldn't rush. We moved in in August. We just finished our bedroom. So, it took us 9 months. We have time. We definitely need some storage space.

We're not very organized at the moment. We have to tell ourselves that it's going to work. Taking the time allowed us to optimize the space and do it as best we could. There are always things that are adaptable. We have to tell ourselves that what we see in others' homes is not necessarily adaptable at home . But that there are always solutions.

Is there a space in your home that you still dislike? If so, why?

No. We've really thought about a lot of things. The only thing I would change is the laundry room. I'd like to add 15m2. It's not a question of layout. The rooms in our house are well distributed. It's not the surface area that's important. You have to dedicate the volumes in each room from the start of the project. When some people build their house, they put more volume in the master bedroom. We wanted the girls' bedrooms to be bigger than ours. We only use our bedroom for sleeping. The girls have their friends in their room. They have toys. You have to think carefully about the volumes. You shouldn't say to yourself "I'm going to make a big 30m2 kitchen and a 30m2 living room" when you don't cook much. If we want to organize ourselves, we have to think exactly where we want to put these volumes.

We have to plan ahead. We have to make built-in furniture whenever possible. This avoids having extra furniture. This saves space. We asked the architect for a space in which we could put shelves.

What is the most important thing for you when it comes to decorating?

It's about drawing inspiration from others. But it must be done in relation to your lifestyle. You must understand your desires and needs. The ideal is to regularly sort through your belongings. We won't be overwhelmed with things we no longer use. This allows us to be more organized and feel better at home.

In your opinion, what is the one thing to avoid when it comes to storage?

You should avoid keeping everything . This is the worst thing about storage. You should also avoid buying a piece of furniture just because it looks good. Instead, you should buy a piece of furniture because it suits your needs. It's better to buy a large TV stand than a small one. There's more storage space. You should also opt for two-in-one furniture. Modularity opens up interesting possibilities. This makes furniture more durable. We can always find a new use for it in the future.

What is the most important thing for you when it comes to decorating?

Some people like to live in an organized mess. I find that tidying up helps you live better at home. I tend to get annoyed more easily when the house is messy. When the house is tidy, you relax. You feel better.
