How to Install a Pegboard on Plasterboard, Concrete, or Brick Walls? The Complete Guide

Mounting is often the first question future pegboard buyers ask. "Does it really hold? How do I attach it to my plasterboard wall? What if I have concrete?" Good news: Aire pegboards are designed for easy installation on all types of surfaces, with all necessary hardware included. Here's the complete guide.

What makes mounting a pegboard different from a standard shelf

A pegboard is not mounted like a simple shelf. To function correctly, the panel must be spaced exactly 18 mm from the wall, measured from its front face. This space is essential: it allows the stainless steel pins to be inserted from the back of the panel, providing strength and stability to the accessories.

At Aire, this problem is solved by providing spacers calibrated to the pegboard's thickness. For a 15 mm pegboard (P15), the spacers are 3 mm (15+3=18 mm). For a 9 mm pegboard (P9), the spacers are 9 mm (9+9=18 mm). You don't need to calculate or improvise anything.

Hardware included with every Aire pegboard

Each Aire pegboard comes with all mounting hardware: Fischer Duopower multi-material screws and wall plugs (suitable for all common surfaces), spacers calibrated to the pegboard's thickness, and a Torx10 key for tightening the pins. The mounting is invisible once the panel is installed.

Mounting on concrete or cinder block

This is the simplest and strongest case. Concrete and cinder block easily accept the supplied Fischer Duopower wall plugs. Drill at 5.5 or 6 mm according to instructions, insert the plug, screw in. The admissible load on this type of surface reaches 160 kg/m², which is well beyond the usual needs of a domestic pegboard.

Tip: Use a drill bit suitable for concrete (SDS drill bit or carbide drill bit). Check for the absence of pipes or electrical cables in the drilling area with a metal detector.

Mounting on brick

Brick is a solid but sometimes heterogeneous support. The Duopower multi-material wall plugs adapt very well: their double expansion ensures a firm grip even if the drilling passes through a less dense area. The procedure is the same as for concrete: drill at 5.5-6 mm, admissible load of 160 kg/m².

Mounting on plasterboard (BA13)

Plasterboard (BA13) is the most common support in modern apartments. It is lighter and less resistant than concrete, but perfectly suitable for wall pegboards if certain rules are followed.

The Fischer Duopower multi-material wall plugs supplied with Aire pegboards are BA13 compatible. Ideally, drill into the metal studs of the wall (spaced approximately every 60 cm) for maximum stability. If you cannot find a stud, toggle anchors or Molly bolts are also suitable (not supplied but available at hardware stores).

Admissible load on BA13: 55 kg/m². This is largely sufficient for a pegboard equipped with common accessories (utensils, books, small objects).

The 4 steps for installing an Aire pegboard

Step 1: Mark the drilling points. Place the pegboard against the wall at the desired location, level it with a spirit level, and mark the 4 mounting holes with a pencil through the pre-drilled perforations on the panel.

Step 2: Drill the wall. Use a drill bit suitable for the type of surface (concrete, brick, or plasterboard), diameter 5.5 or 6 mm. Depth: approximately 40 mm. Vacuum up dust.

Step 3: Install the screws and spacers. Insert the Duopower wall plugs into the holes. Screw in the screws slightly, leaving the head protruding by approximately the thickness of the spacer. Place the spacers over the screws. Position the pegboard over them and tighten the screws until flush.

Step 4: Check the installation. The panel must be flat, securely anchored, with an 18 mm space between its front face and the wall. Test the solidity by pressing firmly. You can now insert your pins and accessories.

How long does it take to install an Aire pegboard?

In practice, installing an Aire pegboard takes between 10 and 15 minutes for a beginner DIYer. Preparation (marking, drilling) takes the most time. The panel installation itself takes 2 to 3 minutes.

Can a pegboard be installed without drilling?

This question often arises, especially for renters. In theory, drill-free mounting systems exist (ultra-strong double-sided adhesives, suction cup rails…), but they are not suitable for the loads of an equipped pegboard. For a reliable and durable installation, 4 small holes are essential. The good news: the holes left by Aire screws (5.5 or 6 mm) are easily fillable with plaster and a little paint when you move out.

Frequently asked questions about pegboard mounting

"My wall is tiled, can I still mount my pegboard?" Yes. Ceramic tiles can be drilled with a ceramic or diamond drill bit. Locate the grout lines to avoid cracking a tile. Duopower wall plugs also work behind tiling.

"How many screws are needed for a large pegboard?" For L and XL sizes, Aire recommends 6 to 8 mounting points for better load distribution.

"Are the screws visible once the pegboard is installed?" No. The screws are inserted into the pegboard's perforations, which disappear into the surface once the panel is installed. The mounting is completely invisible.
